Why “Emails for Upcoming Event” will not be a part of Family Connections

While coding some feature requests for FCMS 2.0 (view the progress)  I noticed Ticket #21 “Send emails for upcoming calendar events”.  Not sure why I didn’t think about it before, but this type of functionality cannot be done through PHP.  It could be done using cron or something similar, but running cron jobs is not something that every web host allows.

So, for that reason I will NOT be adding this feature as part of the default functionality of FCMS.

Ideally someone would volunteer to code this as a mod, but if that doesn’t happen and enough people complain, I’ll just create the mod myself after FCMS 2.0 is released.

  1. That makes sense, but just out of curiosity, why not send emails when new post is put on the message board. My family will not use FCMS unless it has that feature, they’re too lazy and forgetful to check many sites (and by many i mean more than email). Just wondering thanks :)

  2. I think that is a completely seperate feature, and I’m not opposed to that at all.

  3. I agree it’s a diferent feature, but the reason I ask is that there is a feature requst like that and it is marked invalid

  4. It’s probably because at first glance, I thought it was a duplicate. I’ll change it back.

  5. You said if enough ppl complain… here is my complaint! HAHA I would love to see this feature added because as John stated, my family NEVER remembers to check the family site (or they are just too dang lazy) and this feature would “remind” them to log on and see what is going on.
